~ BBC 1 ~
On Good Friday 2002 (29th March) the BBC finally said goodbye to their trademark symbol for over 3 decades. Out went the much loved globe (in the balloon form) to be replaced with idents featuring, designed to represent the wider audience that the BBC now serves. At the same time, the BBC clock disappeared from our screens, probably never to be seen again, and a new campaign was launched advertising BBC1 as 'The One', although this wasnt seen in full until April.
BBC1 - (29/3/2002-Present)
BBC1 - First New Look Promo
Just before 9.00am, after the Breakfast programme finished, we got our first glimpse at the new red BBC1 box, designed to follow the pattern of BBC2 and BBC4, apart from being on the left hand side. This particular ad was double produced, as we'd seen it in the old style for a few days beforehand. I despised the audio track then, and I still despise it now!!
BBC1 - The One Snippet
Still coming up to 9.00am, and after the first new look ad, we got to see a snippet of the new 'The One' promotion. Basically a guy drops from the sky. This was one of several 10 second snippets shown, before the full 90 second long 'The One' ad started showing about a month later. The full promo can be seen further down the page!
BBC1 - 2nd New Look Promo
Still not quite 9.00 yet, and another new look advert is seen. As far as I can recall, however, this is a brand new ad, not seen under the old look.
BBC1 First New Ident
Then, after all that postponing, the BBC finally let us see the new ident. The first one showing people doing acrobatics on a rooftop... see it all the time dont you!! (Oh, and I know the ident's proper name, I just can't spell it!)
BBC1 - Salsa
Gradually, throughout the day, more and more of the new idents were unveiled. This one shows a load of people dancing, leading into to Keeping Up Appearances.
BBC1 - Ballet
Some people doing ballet led us into the lunchtime news on that first day. Nowadays, this ident has been all-but-retired.
BBC1 - HipHop
This ident is one of the ones where we can actually see it representing someone. It shows some basketball players in wheelchairs. I am the only one to notice the distinct lack of a basketball in this ident!!
BBC1 - Rave
A load of people dancing in a big rave party was used on the first day to lead into the BBC's comedy series 'My Hero'.
BBC1 - Acrobats
This was used to link into the film 'The Borrowers' on the new look's first day.
BBC1 - Haka
Skipping forward to Saturday, this rugby ident was used to link in to a sports programmes. ah! Now I can see the logic behind that!!
BBC1 - Tapdogs
The last of the first batch of new idents, shows a load of tapdancers. This was recorded quite a while after the first launch day!
BBC1 - The One (Full 90 seconds)
About a month after the new idents, the full version of 'The One' promo started showing. Basically it shows a guy desperate to get home quickly to avoid missing BBC1. The promo is usually attached to the beginning of a major program, being preceeded by an ident saying something like 'BBC1 - Its The One'. This, for example, was shown at the beginning of the new series of Auf Wiedersehen Pet in April!
BBC1 - Music Video
When the 'red box' idents were introduced, there were only 8. Despite promises of another 8 coming by the summer, no more ever appeared. Finally, in October 2002, a new ident was added, tieing in with the start of the BBC's 'Fame Academy'. Basically, a group of people making a pop-video, with lots of red and white flashy lights. This recording is from its first airing, at 8pm on October 4th 2002, hence the announcer lets it play for a while before talking.
BBC1 - Bollywood
Later in 2002, another new ident was unveiled, this time playing upon the dancing typical of the Bollywood film industry.
BBC1 2003 - Tango
The next new ident was introduced in January 2003, just after the Christmas one disappeared. This time the theme was 'Tango' (The dance, not the drink). Great music, shame about the studio-look.
BBC1 2003 - Tai Chi
June of 2003, and another new ident finally appeared.(actually, there's 2 slightly different versions of it, but thats another story). Based upon Tai Chi (So I'm led to believe), this certainly looks a lot classier than the last few new ones, possibly due to the lack of the cheap and tacky studio look!.
BBC1 2003 - Skateboarder
September 2003, and another new addition to the set. This time featuring skateboarders dressed in..um... red moving through some docklands (containing a coincidentally high amount of red objects!).
BBC1 2004 - Maasai
A brand new ident for the new year on BBC1, perhaps in an attempt to make up for their total lack of effort at Christmas. It was filmed on location in Kenya, by the BBC Natural History Unit who were out producing a new series of The Big Cat Diaries.
